How to Detail Your Car Like a Pro: The Complete Auto Rae-Chem Guide

There's something deeply satisfying about stepping back and looking at a perfectly detailed car. Every panel gleaming, tyres dressed, windows spotless. What most people don't realise is that achieving that showroom finish at home doesn't require a professional setup — just the right products and a proper process.

At Auto Rae-Chem, we've been supplying professional valeters, car dealerships, and car enthusiasts across the UK for years. In this guide, we're sharing the exact process the pros use — from the very first rinse to the final shine.

Step 1: Start With the Wheels

Always clean your wheels first. Brake dust and road grime will inevitably splash onto a freshly washed car if you tackle wheels last — so flip the order.

For lightly soiled alloys, our Brite Wheels Non-Acid Alloy Wheel Cleaner is the perfect everyday solution. It's pH-safe on all wheel types including chrome, painted, and lacquered alloys, and works without the risks that acidic cleaners carry.

For wheels with heavy brake dust, tar, or oxidation — particularly on older or neglected alloys — our Alloy Bright Acidic Aluminium Cleaner & Brightener will restore that brilliant factory shine. Apply, leave for 30–60 seconds, agitate with a dedicated wheel brush, and rinse thoroughly.

Step 2: The Pre-Wash

The golden rule of safe car washing is: remove as much loose dirt as possible before you ever touch the paint with a mitt.

If you have a pressure washer and foam lance, this is where our Multi Purpose Degreaser earns its keep. Applied through a foam lance, it clings to the bodywork and begins lifting traffic film, road grime, and insect deposits. Leave it to dwell for a few minutes, then rinse off — taking a surprising amount of contamination with it before your wash mitt goes anywhere near the paint.

Step 3: The Two-Bucket Wash

Single-bucket washing is one of the most common causes of fine scratches and swirl marks in paint. Every time you dunk your dirty mitt back into the same soapy water, you're loading it up with the grit you just removed — and dragging it straight back across your paintwork.

The solution is simple: use two buckets. Our 2x White Bucket & Black Grit Shield kit gives you everything you need. One bucket holds your shampoo solution; the other is clean rinse water. After each panel, rinse your mitt in the clean bucket before reloading with shampoo — the grit shield at the bottom traps the dirt so it doesn't transfer back onto your mitt and into your paint.

For the shampoo itself, our Cherry Burst Car Shampoo is a high-foam, neutral pH formula that produces a thick, slick lather to help your mitt glide safely over the paintwork. Available in 500ml, 1L, and 5L — equally suited to the weekend enthusiast or the busy valeter working through a fleet.

Step 4: Paint Decontamination

Even after a thorough wash, paintwork often contains embedded contaminants you can't see but can feel — tiny particles of iron fallout, industrial fallout, and tar that bond to the clear coat over time and leave the surface feeling rough to the touch.

Running a clay bar over clean, lubricated paintwork removes these embedded particles and leaves the surface glassy smooth — and it's essential preparation before applying any wax, sealant, or coating, because these products bond far better to properly decontaminated paint.

Our Pro Paintwork Clay Bar is available in fine (blue), medium (purple), and heavy (red) grades, so you can match the grade to the level of contamination. Always use with a clay lubricant, and work panel by panel in straight, overlapping strokes.

Step 5: The Quick Detailer Finish

Once the car is clean and dry, the finishing touch makes all the difference. Finito Hydrophobic Quick Detailer Spray is our go-to for that final layer of gloss and protection. A few sprays onto each panel, buffed out with a clean microfibre, leaves a deep, reflective shine and a hydrophobic surface that causes water to bead and roll away — keeping your car cleaner for longer between washes.

Finito also works brilliantly as a drying aid. A couple of sprays on the panel before you pull your drying towel across it reduces friction, speeds up drying, and adds an extra hit of shine at the same time.

Step 6: Tyres & Dressing

Clean tyres dressed to a deep, rich finish are the hallmark of a proper detail. Our Hi-Shine Long Life Silicone Tyre Dressing delivers a long-lasting, natural-looking gloss that won't sling off onto the bodywork. Apply sparingly with a tyre applicator or brush, allow to dry for a couple of minutes, and stand back.

Step 7: Glass & Interior

Streak-free glass is one of those details that separates a truly clean car from one that just looks clean at a glance. Our Microfibre Glass Cloth (40x40cm) is purpose-designed for glass — its ultra-fine weave picks up smears and fingerprints without leaving fibres or streaks. Use one cloth damp and one dry for a crystal-clear finish on windscreens, side windows, and mirrors.

For leather interiors, our Premium Leather Cleaner safely lifts ingrained dirt from seats, dashboards, and door cards without drying out the material. Suitable for all genuine and synthetic leathers, it works as a standalone cleaner or in combination with a hot extraction machine.

The Right Tools Make the Difference

Great results come from great products used with the right tools. A good detailing brush — like our Chemical Resistant Detailing Brush — is invaluable for getting into air vents, around badges, into door shuts, and into the tight gaps a wash mitt simply can't reach. And our range of Kwazar Mercury Pro+ Trigger Sprayers give you a reliable, consistent spray pattern whether you're applying a diluted APC, a glass cleaner, or a quick detailer.

For the finishing rinse stage, the Aqua Rinse Spray-On Valeting Wax is well worth adding — it leaves a polymer wax coating that sheaths the paintwork as the car dries, adding protection with almost zero extra effort.
